Ryan O'Donnell Dominates in His Home Country
by Edward Jewisky
Rising star Ryan O'Donnell (4-0-0) was able to continue his winning ways tonight, as he dismantled and picked apart the Russian Fedor Wolowitz (2-4-0). O'Donnell, the Irish native, saw his amateur record improve to a perfect 4-0-0 as he won the fight by Unanimous Decision. O'Donell won on all three judges scorecards 30-24, which included three 10-8 rounds on all judges score cards.
The fight very one sided, however round 1 saw O'Donnell have one of the most inactive rounds of his career. Ryan was able to land a takedown and looked decent on the ground, but was not threatening. Round 2 was a completely different story. O'Donnell kept the fight standing and repeatedly lit up Wolowitz. The Russian was game, as he took all of the punishment inside the cage and kept coming. This marks another fight where O'Donnell has failed to finish.
What's next for the undefeated Irishman? He heads into the FW tournament in pretty good position. The European FW tournament will pose an interesting challenge for O'Donnell. While the best of the division will compete in the USA FW tournament, there will be some decent challenges. Most notably, Frenchman Jasmin Barnard (2-0-0) has made a statement in his two fights and is likely the #2 seed in the tournament.
O'Donnell will likely be a favorite to win the European FW tournament. After that, he will undoubtedly turn pro, and from that point we can only guess. GFC has been interesting in promoting a fight between a Mendoza brother and O'Donnell. This seems like a very strong possibility for O'Donnell. The other option I've been hearing is a LW fight. Interestingly enough, British LW Keiran Palmer's (5-2-1) name keeps popping up as a potential opponent for the Irishman.
In his actual division, O'Donnell is going to have to get through some stiff competition if he wants to lay claim to being the #1 fighter in the division. Omar Romero (8-0-0) and Damarcus Jackson (6-0-0) are just two of the many hungry Featherweights looking to climb the to the top of the ranks. At this point, a fight with either of these men would be very competitive for O'Donnell. You'd have to wonder if he'd be the favorite in those matches. How good is his ground game? Romero may test that. Jackson also is known for his relentless ground and pound.
